about

˗ˋˏ ♡ ˎˊ˗

We recently put together a Valentine's Day compilation album with songs from community members and friends, featuring beautiful artwork by Emma Kohlmann and lettering by Caroline Gay. All profits will be donated to The Freedom Theatre in the West Bank, Palestine.

The Freedom Theatre is a community-based theater and cultural center which stages professional theater productions and offers training in acting, pedagogy, and photography. The Freedom Theatre also produces books, exhibitions, and short films. It has served as a symbol of hope for many.

Toadstool Records decided to raise funds for the Freedom Theatre because of our belief in the importance of art as a healing tool. Our community members and friends have generously contributed their work - much of it exclusive to this release - in an effort to raise awareness and provide much-needed fiscal support for the Freedom Theatre.

The Freedom Theatre itself has long endured violence, intimidation and vandalism. On December 12th 2023 into the early hours of December 13th, their building was ransacked by Israeli forces as part of a widespread military operation in Jenin. Forces shot inside the theater and destroyed their offices. Artistic director Ahmed Tobasi and producer Mustafa Sheta were arrested in their homes that night: blindfolded, handcuffed, and taken away. Ahmed was released the next day, while Mustafa’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Human rights groups and Palestinian officials estimate that more than 6,000 Palestinians have been arrested by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war. The U.N. high commissioner for human rights has documented "mass arbitrary arrests, detentions and reported torture and other ill-treatment by [Israeli forces], raising concerns of collective punishment.”
